I want some roomy and moderately flattering lightweight shorts and pants for hiking. I'm looking at these two patterns:

Simplicity 3880: https://sewing.patternreview.com/patterns/13983
Green Pepper Sunset Bay: http://www.rockywoods.com/Patterns/Pants-and-Shorts-Sewing-Patterns/Sunset-Bay-Cargo-Shorts-Zip-Leg-Pants-Pattern

I am thinking about using the Simplicity pattern as the base and just seeing how to do the zip off legs from the Green Pepper pattern. The main problem I have with commercially made pants is women's pants don't go to a large enough size for me and men's pants don't fit well - too loose in the waist if it fits my hips but still tends to bind around my thigh. So my thinking is a women's pattern will fit through the seat and thigh well.

Has anyone made outdoor clothing like this? How was your experience? What fabric did you use?
