I used a copy of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and recovered it to look like Defensive Magical Theory, which is one of the school books often referenced in that book.

I used tissue paper and Mod Podge over puffy fabric paint, then painted it all and used gold paint pen on the outside of the pages. Very fancy! I posted a full tutorial in my blog, along with tutorial to make two other Harry Potter books. I look for them every time I go a thrift store--I plan to recover the whole set!

I never would have thought tissue paper and puff paint could be so versatile for making great looking book covers. I definitely need to remember this for altered art projects! Thanks for sharing!

That is really cool. I have some old puffy paint stashed that I should use up, I'll have to try this out Smiley.

HEY!  This is fantastic!

I was just wondering how much reading the book would ruin the decoration?  Or did you not plan for this copy to be readable?

It looks gorgeous though!

Thank you!! So far the cover has stayed intact very well with one read through--and it's been handled a lot by curious visitors to my apartment. There's a coating of matte Mod Podge mixed with water that was used to apply the tissue paper which keeps the paper from becoming damaged. Then I painted over that. It's definitely meant to be read, and I'm aiming to recover the whole series. I have three books done and keep looking in thrift stores for my missing titles.

I would say that even if the outside sustains damage, it will be easy to repair to keep the weathered aesthetic--just  a bit of Mod Podge and paint.
