I made this hoop for monkey_girl in the Box of Sunshine swap.

It's the smallest Totoro from My Neighbor Totoro! Smiley

At first I was going to do my usual style of flat applique.

But when I got this far, you could really see the yellow through the white (not so much in the picture, but much more in person), and I wanted him to be a brighter white, so I decided to stuff him, so there would be white polyfil between him and the yellow velvet.

I really like the 3D effect, and will probably be using this technique again!

Adorable! Love the 3D effect, too. It really makes him pop.

I would have had poly fill sticking out all over. He looks great!

I like Kit-Kat, unless I'm with 4 or more people.

Thanks so much! They've definitely become one of my favorite crafts. Smiley  And yeah, it was a bit of a challenge to keep all the polyfil inside the applique, since it kept sticking to the velvet and trying to stay outside!

Going with the 3D effect was definitely the right choice as the little critter really pops out, literally and figuratively!

I'm so glad you made a post for this, I am super enamoured of that awesome shiny golden yellow, it's amazing! I am not familiar with the creature but he (she? it?) is super cute and I agree that the poofy version is so much better than flat. Looks really great.
