Made for the mini quilt swap. My partner's favourite colours are cool purples, greens, blues & greys and I wanted to incorporate lots of shades. I came across this free pattern and thought I'd give paper piecing a try.

I'm told it gets easier the more you do it. That's good to hear because it is weird and backwards, everything you know about putting fabric together is wrong since it's assembled in reverse. My sense of spacial relationships got a bad case of vertigo, lol.

It's far from perfect and I wish I'd had the nerve to try one of those beautiful swirly quilting patterns but after the frustration of putting the feathers together I didn't want to risk messing them up and having to start over again. Since it's a mini quilt I think the radiating lines highlight it well without being too busy.

Ooh, great job! Love the colors and this is a really nice feather pattern, there's quite a few out there but I think this one looks more feathery than most! Cheesy

Thanks Mare, my partner listed these colours in her Q. I like the look, next time I'll try it in another colourway. I think it would be so beautiful in a rainbow sequence.
The feathery look is exactly why I chose this one rather than the more blocky patterns out there. There's another I just found that I'm getting my mom to order for me since they don't ship to Canada. I will try all 5 of these feather shapes and see how I like them:

(we do have First Nations heritage in our family tree but I'm still not comfortable appropriating the sacred imagery of another culture so will copy only the feathers and forgo the dream catcher part of that pattern out of respect)

Ooh I like the feathers in that one too! So fun. It's super easy to get obsessed with paper piecing! I won a really cool book at quilt guild a while back, it's retro kitchen appliances to paper piece!

Oh my gosh, show it? I am entranced with all the awesome pictures that can be made with paper piecing. It is a serious PITA but worth it in the end. I am afraid to start a new obsession but... it might be too late Cheesy.

It's The Paper Pieced Home by Penny Layman. I guess it's all kinds of retro house stuff, not just appliances which I was thinking for some reason lol! The couch and tv on the front cover are really cute, and I love the viewmaster!

This one is madly loved by some of my friends and I want to own it someday:

And, my friend Cath has an amazing blog full of free paper pieced designs she's made, they are more geometric than like animals or objects. She also has some links to other designers.

Not that I'm trying to get you even more hooked or anything... Cheesy

ETA: annnnd another one I really want..or maybe I already have. Lol can't get to all my craft books right now and I am notorious for re-buying ones I already own.

This project appeals to me in every way. I love the colors and topic. Great execution. I'm jelly of your partner!

I discovered paper piecing a few years ago. I just had to wrap my head around it, and then it just clicked! I love how impressive the final product is.

Love this!!! I really don't think I have the patience for this type of thing lol. But its so lovely! I would have to start with a really super simple pattern! Kudos for this being your first with this technique! To me, it looks pretty flawless! It would take someone like me quite a few attempts to get something even resembling the pattern lol!

Mare, oh my gosh, those links! I'm going to work on making up a pattern for something I can't find online anywhere and need for a swap. I'll share it here if I can get it right. As complicated as this seems, I'm pretty sure I can figure it how to draft the lines.

Mandykaye, this link Mare posted of her friend's site has simple looking blocks and great instructions.

Give it a try! The feathers were probably not the best pattern to start with, I am certain something easier would have been much more doable and given me some confidence.
This is a great learning resource here, take a look at this simple step by step:
