I don't need no instructions to know how to rock.

I don't know why, but I love making personalized piñatas for Valentine's day.  I have some new coworkers this year, so I decided to make bunch to bring into work to share.

They are fairly simple and cheap to make, just a little time consuming.

I purchased a few packages of 11"x14" tag board from the dollar store, and cut it into hearts using my Silhouette machine.  You need two hearts for each piñata.  You also need one tag board strip for each piñata.  The width of the strip will be the depth of your piñata.  The strip should be about two to four inches shorter than the circumference of your heart.  In the photo, my strips are folded in half, which was just to help with cutting.

Once you have all of your pieces cut, it's time to make your heart "box" piñata base.  Attach a piece of masking tape to one of the long edges of one of the strips.  Begin taping it to the heart.  Your strip should be perpendicular to the heart.

Once you tape your strip all the way around, you'll have something that looks like this:

Then, you need to attach the other heart shape to the top.  Again, it's easiest to attach the tape to the strip first and just kind of set the heart in place and push the tape down, maneuvering as you go.

Once the other heart is attached, you'll have a complete "box."

Fill with treats.

Once you've filled the piñata base with treats, it's time to seal up the hole.  I wanted mine to be easy to open, so I included a pull string.  To do that, fold a strip of tissue paper in half a few times (the folded strip should be wide and long enough to easily cover the hole).  Cut a piece of ribbon that is about twice the size of your box opening.  Glue the ribbon to one side of the folded tissue paper, leaving a tail on both ends (the tail toward to bottom point of the heart should be longer than the top tail).  Then place the tissue paper over the hole and tape in place.  The ribbon should be on the backside of the tissue when attached (so the ribbon is facing the hole).  Tape down the top tail along the curve of the heart to help make sure it stays in place.

Time to decorate!  I used a pair of "shredder" scissors to cut a bunch of strips of tissue paper.

Then I used a glue stick to attach them to the outside of the piñata base, just wrapping them around from the bottom to the top.

I also used my Silhouette to print and cut some little instructional "Pull" tabs.

I have eight more in the works.  In the end I'll have made all 16 of them for about $10, including the tag board, tissue paper, and treats (I didn't include "stash" items in that price).

Overall, a fun and high-impact project to spread some Valentine's love and cheer!

These are so sweet!! I'm glad you noted the pull tab... I was thinking how awful to be expected to smash such a pretty little pinata to get the goodies inside. Great work! <3
