Finally finished another painting!  My work schedule has been brutal and combined with continued work on the new house I've had NO time for art. I made the decision to change over to a position that allows 12 hour so I only need to work three days a week!  For the first time in years I actually get to see my husband AND I've been getting some art done!

This is another painting referencing myth stories....this time with the goddess Freyja as the subject.  With stories of Freyja's chariot being drawn by cats (some say blue cats) I pictured her as a crazy cat lady.  The necklace she's wearing represents Brisingamen (the necklace Freyja obtained from the dwarves and the boa references the falcon feathered cloak Freyja is said to wear.

The boar was added to reference the boar Hildisvini that Freyja rides into battle and other than the necklace that boar was my favorite part of the painting to do.  My 2 cats were models for all of the cats (mainly for lighting purposes).....body shapes and colors were adjusted to create a variety of blue cats.  The only ones not altered are the two cats on the sofa  fascinated by the boar.

The painting is oils on a 36" x 48" canvas.  I still think I could stand to boost the shadows a bit, but here is anyway:

This is AMAZING!

That's great.  I'm glad you pointed out the bits and pieces, I don't know her story to make the connections.

I see what you mean about the shadows; the left side of the painting seems too bright, and the pillows almost seem to be the focus of the painting.

Let's go out swinging!

thanks for sharing this! i love the aspects of the mythology that you have modernized and depicted. this is so fun!

I agree with all the others!:

-This is amazing. Truly wonderful.
-Including commentary on the individual abstract pieces and how they were reimaginged made me really appreciate both your talent and the concept.
-I need to bone up on my mythology, because the modernized nod to the mythos is so well done, I wish I would have been able to pick up on it without the direction!

And my comments - I love Freyja's body positioning. Don't all women sit crazy when lounging around? I love how she breaks the 4th wall. Her gaze is both challenging and mysterious. Her dress detail lends it a 50s/60s feel (along with the plant hangers and starburst wall clock). The drape of her necklace and how it would fall different directions with her slouch? Ugh! SO Awesome!  I want to know this lady!

I also love the non primary color pallet. The blues on the cats are beautiful, and their body language is so spot on! The boar is such a tongue in cheek! Powerful to have him on her wall.

Okay. Gush over. I love this piece. Thank you for sharing! Very talented - yay for 12 hr days to free up time!

Thanks guys!!

If anyone is interested this is the other "mythology" painting in this series. I posted it here a few years ago:

I also have plans for a third one, but it won't be complete until sometime next year.
