It's been a really long time since I've posted here! I've been entirely focused on sewing and crafting for Blythe dolls for the past few years, but For Christmas, my mom has asked me to make her an elephant artwork from fabric, so I've had to switch gears and try my hand at something different.

The design and background are entirely composed of pre-cut 2" fabric squares that are intended to be used in watercolor quilts. I started by sketching the outline of the elephant on freezer paper. Working on the freezer paper, I filled it in with the darker fabrics, which extended beyond the elephant outline, and Mod Podge-d it all together. When it was dry, I cut out the elephant, so it has a nice sharp silhouette. (The freezer paper peeled right off, it was great to work on.) Then I arranged the lighter colored fabrics on a 16" x 20" canvas, moving from very light in the center to a medium tone along the boarders. I Mod Podge-d all of that, and when it was dry, added the elephant to the center, again using plenty of Mod Podge to secure it in place.

After giving it a spray with clear acrylic sealer (to keep the surface from getting tacky, which can be a problem with Mod Podge), I put it into this ready made frame, and it's ready to surprise Mom for Christmas!

I love elephants and hoard fabric.  I may have to adapt this idea!

Thanks for sharing your technique, I'm thinking about giving it a go now! I love how you made the soft transition in your background.
