I keep a collection of "choice reading books" in my classroom for students to borrow. Right now, my bookshelves are a bit sparse, so I needed some more bookends. I already had made 2 (a T-rex and a 2-headed mythical beast), but after I got two more book cases, a few more were required!

Supplies Used:
Dinosaur toys (combination of thrift store finds and dollar store purchases)
Bricks or paving stones
Strong adhesive (E-6000 works great)
Spray paint
Fun foam
Hot glue

First, I glued the dinosaurs to the pavers:

Then, I sprayed painted them (I put them in empty paper boxes and then sprayed them in the courtyard outside of my classroom):

All sprayed! I missed a few spots, mostly on the triceratops, but I can live with it Smiley

Then, so I didn't scratch the book shelves, I cut some fun foam and hot glued it onto the bottom of each paver.

Finally, I put them in place on the shelves! Some of them were a bit tall but, fortunately, I had a few shelves that would fit them.

Now, I'll see how long it takes the kids to notice that I put them on the shelves!

I like Kit-Kat, unless I'm with 4 or more people.

Thanks! And, you're right! You could do this with a bunch of toys! Now I want to make some with frogs!

Saw these on the nerd games thread and had to come check it out. They are amazing!! LOVEEEEE Them. Such a clever idea, and so thoughtfully executed (the foam on the bottom was a stroke of genius). The metallic spray paint was a super idea, they look phenomenal. Dinosaurs for the win! Smiley

Thanks! I was tempted to use primary colors, but I like the more subdued metallic look. They work really well, too!

I see those big rubber dinos at thrifts stores all the time and your bookend recycling of them is brilliant!  If I was a kid looking for a book in your classroom I'd notice those right away and be all, "I want one!  Where did you get these?"  I've NEVER seen creative bookends like these in classrooms or libraries.

The kids always asked about the original 2 I had made, and I always thought it was funny that they were so impressed that I made them! So, when I did this batch I did it in stages in my classroom so that the (more observant) kids could see the steps.

What a great idea and so durable!  I can imagine a dino trophy for the one to read the most as well.

These are a hoot!

Thanks! Yesterday, a girl picked one up (off of the bookcase, where it was holding up books), and asked me what it was for. I guess she is truly a child of the digital age!

What a great idea and so durable!  I can imagine a dino trophy for the one to read the most as well.

Thanks! I think they'll hold up pretty well. I was able to lift one of them up by the dinosaur, and the dino didn't pull off of the paver.

I don't track the books they read in my class, but maybe I can make a trophy for the Language Arts teacher. The kids have weekly reading logs they need to complete, so maybe she can give an award to the kid who completed all of them (a set of bookends would be very appropriate!). I'll have to propose that to her. Thanks for the idea!

What a clever idea! I have purchased a few pairs of bookends for my shelf but they are never actually sturdy enough to hold my books. I am going to have to decorate some bricks!

You definitely should! The hardest part was waiting for things to dry: first the glue, then the paint!

Gasp!  Making some of these for our classroom.  Thank you!

They were pretty fun to make! And, every once in a while, my students rearrange them to simulate dinosaur battles. Right now, they've collected them all on one set of bookshelves and pairs of dinos are attacking one another. It just occurred to me that my students might not actually realize that they are there to hold up the books...   Cheesy

My wife and I have looked at a lot of bookends in stores over the years, but still have zero bookends.  Nothing has quite had the style we wished.  These are awesome tho, and something I'm going to experiment with!  Yes, I just want to play with dinosaurs. lol

They definitely get the job done! If I had smaller dinosaurs, I might have used smaller bricks (I have some square pavers in the basement), but these are nice and hefty and do a great job of holding up the books.
