I surprised my SO yesterday by dressing up in a complete 50s style outfit, he was taking me on a date to celebrate our anniversary. I had the dress, underskirt, picked up a great bag and cardigan in a thrift store, made a pearl necklace and bought white glove, the only thing I was missing was a hat. No properly dressed lady would dream of going out to dinner without a hat in the 50s.

This was made in about an hour. And dead easy too.

Supplies:
  • thin card, cereal box is ideal
Fabric to cover, I used stretchy 'velvet' stretch fabric is easy to work with
thin round elastic (I only had white but it was fine)
feathers, lace, buttons, sparklies, net etc to embellish.
    Hot glue gun.

It starts as a little curvy cap,

1-Cut an oval out of card.
I eyeballed this, using my hand as a guide.

2- Cut two slots from the ends of the oval about 1/3 way to the centre,
-Overlap them by about 1/3 inch and glue. This will make the cap shape.

3 Cover this with an oval of stretchy fabric, I used a hot glue gun to stick it down., This should be about an inch bigger all round

4 Draw around the covered oval to make another oval of fabric, this will cover underneath.
-Before you glue this on, measure how long you need the elastic to be, (alternatively you could glue in hair clips or sew on a band.)

5-Cut a length of elastic, make two small holes in either side of the bottom oval of fabric, poke the elastic through and tie a knot. You are not trying to make a knot large enough so it wont pull back, it is just to give more surface area for the hot glue.

6 Put a line of hotglue underneath with extra big blobs where the elastic will sit. and press in place the underneath oval I did this in stages, about 1/3 of the circumference at a time.

Now you have the basic form. Try it on, make sure you like it. When I tried mine on, there were little points at the tops of the slots that had been cut in cardboard. So i just squashed them down a little and the stretch velvet took up any slack.

7 Embellish it, feathers, and some kind of centre piece, , I made a little rosette out of black lace.

I had a sparkly broach centre and some feathers. feathers are essential I think.

8 Put on the hat and decide where you want the embellishments, They need to be towards the back and as I was wearing this on the left side of my head, they needed to be down on the left side of the form. I got this wrong the first time, glued them in place and had to rip them off, so I added a piece of net to cover the glue..Arrgh!

Actually I had intended there to be a bit of net with this 'hat' a kind of veil, but it looked silly on me, (wasn't stiff enough) so I trimmed it right back.

off out to dinner.

Love the hat. I had not thought of elastic, that's a perfect attachment solution. And you look fabulous! The little hat topped off the outfit perfectly.

Here's the tut I did about a year ago. We came up with very similar solutions. Great minds and all that.

aw you guys are the best. I so wish you had been around when I was a teenager, when I got ready and thought I looked fab (In the 80s, legwarmers, spiked hair, headbands, I was sooo cool!!) my family tended to laugh and say 'you're not wearing that!' you folk would have be so good for my self esteem.  xx

Wow--cmarion and edelc...your instructions are both so clear and supplies are so readily available...the fascinators look very expensive (and they are in the stores!!!)....

I will have to get the kids to save cereal boxes for me!  It would be nice to have something more fancy to wear at the next Halloween dinner party!

Thanks...and I agree with racky--that picture would be lovely to frame as your anniversary memory!
