A place for junk journal makers and junk journal creators to share photos, ask questions and teach techniques.

Join the discussion and get paint on your hands!

August question: Will your journal be an art journal, collection journal, a diary, a glue book/smash book or something else?

Definitions:

Art journal (also called visual journals) are a combination of art and collage, with personal writing included.

Collection journal (also called "en masse" journals) - each page is dedicated to a collection of things - fruit stickers, bus tickets, used postage stamps - stuff you collect in your everyday life.

Scrapbook/travel journal - A book specifically for recording life and family events or created for a trip or vacation.

Glue book/Smash book - A combination of scrapbook (photos and ephemera from your life) in addition to some artistic and scrapbook-y components. (Smash book is a brand name and the embellishments that go with it.)

List journal - A collection of lists of things that make you you.

Mail Art journal - A place to collect decorated envelopes and postage stamps and pen pal information.

Of course, a glue book can be a collection journal which can also be an art journal so use the term/definition that applies to what you make or what you'd like to create.

Hmmmm, it's about time for me to start working on my Goal Book 2017, and since I was hoping to use all recycled material (folders being thrown out, etc) it might count for this? In any case, I'm going to keep my eye on this thread for ideas!

Please join - I am an admirer of those journals. I really wanted to make one for 2016 but I am afraid that once the journal was completed, I would not be inspired to work on the goals!

Ha, I'm the opposite, I have to force myself to finish, I love crossing off goals so so much, I can hardly wait! And if you do a really creative job, the journal's not "done" until you finish the goals, anyway.

I usually have huge, lofty goals of doing things like drawing and coloring to represent finishing things, but in the end, the checkmark on my spreadsheet and writing it messily in the journal is good enough!

I have a feeling I will be spending the evening watching junk journal videos... Cheesy

I put this together this weekend in between finishing up a ninni for the Ninni swap and completing my 27 Craftster Trading cards.

I found this book for $2.00 at the thrift store yesterday. It's about 9" x 11".

I had hoped to use the existing pages and spent about 20 minutes ripping out every other page.

But the pages were almost as flimsy as newsprint so I decided to remove the entire text block. I then glued (with Fabri-Tac) a piece of muslin and then a second piece of batik fabric to reinforce the spine.

I have made about 4 books like this so far and I have covered the entire inside cover with fabric in the other books. But I liked the look of the end papers in this case, so I left it as is.

To make working on pages easier, I am using giant rubber bands, actually file bands, to keep pages in the book.

This way, I can add and subtract pages and take out a page that I am working on.

Here are some things I've added: atlas pages (love the paper - it's a smooth texture and takes paint well. Look for atlases at the thrift store!!), shopping bags, and some of the pages from the original book - some were card stock.

I am looking forward to using this as a combination art journal and glue/smash book. I will make pages as I am inspired and I hope to use up stash stuff only.

I received the most wonderful junk journal from SonjaBoo a while back and have since been collecting "stuff" in a box marked "Junk Journal Stuff" (yeah, creative, I know!)...I did not want hubby to throw it out as trash!

I just did not know where to start...hopefully, after this month, I will be able to at least start...

I love your ideas and techniques...
