The theme for our Needlecraft Guild competition this year was Around the Pond.  For my crochet entry I took inspiration from A Blanket for Squiggle by Vicelikeplague.

My inspiration for the terrapins came from http://www.crochetbug.com/all-roads-lead-to-fresno/;
for the rabbits from http://lovethebluebird.blogspot.com/2012/04/spring-bunny-tutorial.html; and the water lilies were modified from http://www.hopefulhoney.com/2015/04/dahlia-hexagon-crochet-pattern.html;
The fish I made up myself using a standard pineapple for head and body and the snake was an exercise in crocheting a two colour spiral.

This lap blanket is so fun! I appreciate how you pulled from many different inspirations to produce the final result, but the fabricated koi fish are just top notch!

Great job! I would love some closeups of the unique pieces!

As promised here is the close-up of one of the koi.

I also attach thumbnails of the other creatures.
The snake
A terrapin
A water lily
The frog. My son says he looks like roadkill  Roll Eyes Maybe that's why he looks so grumpy.
A rabbit.

I'll work on my notes this weekend and try and attach pdf patterns for each of them to the original post.

The colors are much more vibrant than I initially thought!

And the individual pieces ARE.SO.FUN! The frog face is hysterical! I honestly love he's grumpy! The snakes are surprisingly sweet. And the koi are just as neat as I thought they would be. Varigated thread was absoulutely the right choice.

Thank you for posting additional photos. I absolutely love your unique take on the project. Both 2 and 3D - Just enough to give interest, but not overkill.

Thanks everyone

Sorry I didn't change the colours Embarrassed I found a serendipitous yarn. Sirdar Smiley Stripes Shade no. 262 Orange and cream. DK 80% bamboo 20% wool. As soon as I saw it I knew it would be perfect for the koi.

I've attached a pdf of the koi pattern to the original post.  I don't know if it all makes sense as I haven't tested it by making another fish. Anyone who tries it can always let me know if they run into difficulties.

This is so great! I love how you defined each area with the different yarn colors and included such a wide variety of critters. Very nicely done!
