So I should start with I'm Australian and for fun and to celebrate the fantastic, most wonderful time we had in the US during September we wanted to add some traditional home-style American dishes to our holiday season.

I baked up this Sweet Potato Casserole http://allrecipes.com/recipe/234805/chef-johns-sweet-potato-casserole/

Everyone at the dinner party (pot luck style) last night thought it was a dessert. Some were adding whipped cream.

Is this recipe close to what a "true" Sweet Potato Casserole would be or is it just that as Australian's we aren't used to sweet side dishes with our main meal.

It's a side dish for sure.  That recipe sounds delicious!  Most Americans add a marshmallow topping so whipped cream isn't far off.   Smiley Glad you enjoyed your visit to the states!
