I just love this little guy and now you can make one of your very own!

Gather your supplies:
size H (8mm) crochet hook
white yarn
orange yarn
black yarn
grey yarn
Stitches used: Half double crochet (HDC), and double crochet (DC)
this hat is not worked in rounds, it is joined after each row, the first ch 2 of each row counts as the first double crochet heretoforward

Round 1: Starting with white yarn, and magic circle, make 8 half double crochets, pull tight and slip stitch into top of first HCD (I start all my hats with a HCD magic ring because it creates less of a "pointed cone-head look" on the finished hat)
Round 2: ch 2, dc in same stitch, 2 dc in each stitch around, join at top of ch 2 (16 stitches)
Round 3: ch 2, dc in same stitch, *dc 1, 2 dc in next stitch*, repeat around, join with slip stitch in top of ch 2 (24 stitches),  fasten off white yarn
Round 4: (Switch to grey yarn) ch 2, dc in same stitch, *dc 2, 2 dc in next stitch*, repeat around, join with slip stitch in top of ch 2 (32 stitches)
Round 5: ch 2, dc in same stitch, *dc 3, 2 dc in next stitch*, repeat around, join with slip stitch in top of ch 2, fasten off grey yarn (40 stitches)
Round 6: (switch to white yarn) ch 2, dc in same stitch, *dc 4, 2 dc in next stitch*, repeat around, join with slip stitch in top of ch 2, fasten off white yarn (48 stitches)
Round 7: (switch to orange yarn) ch 2, dc in same stitch, dc 5, 2 dc in next stitch, dc 5, 2 dc in next stitch, dc 5, dc in next stitch, switch to white and dc with white yarn in same stitch as last stitch with orange (this is where the natural increase was, we're just doing it with 1 orange stitch and 1 white stitch), dc with white yarn in next 5 stitches, dc with white yarn into next stitch, switch to orange yarn and dc in same stitch (another half white/half orange increase) continue with orange yarn, *dc 5, 2 dc in next stitch*, repeat around, join with slip stitch in top of ch 2 (56 stitches), fasten off orange yarn
Round 8-12: (switch to white yarn) ch 2, dc each stitch around, join with slip stitch in top of ch 2 (56 stitches)
Round 13: ch 2 dc in next 26, switch to orange, dc in 3, switch to white, dc in 1, switch to orange, dc in 2, switch to white, dc in 14, switch to orange, dc in 9, join with slip stitch in top of ch 2 (56 stitches)
Round 14: ch 2 dc in next 26, switch to orange, dc in 3, switch to white, dc in 1, switch to orange, dc in 2, switch to white, dc in 11, switch to orange, dc in 3, switch to grey, dc in 1, switch to orange dc around to end, join with slip stitch in top of ch 2 (56 stitches)
Round 15: (switch to grey) ch 2, dc in each stitch around to end, join with slip stitch in top of ch 2 (56 stitches), fasten off yarn, weave in ends
NOW, the hat is done but our little buddy still needs his lenses!
Larger lens:
Round 1: (black yarn) 8 HDC in magic ring, pull tight and slip stitch into top of first HCD
Round 2: ch 2, dc in same stitch, 2 dc in each stitch around, join at top of ch 2 (16 stitches)
Round 3: ch 2, dc in same stitch, *dc 1, 2 dc in next stitch*, repeat around, join with slip stitch in top of ch 2 (24 stitches), fasten off and attach to the front of the hat
using a scant amount of grey yarn, place a french knot (see pic for placement) on large lens
Smaller lens: (black yarn) 8 HDC in magic ring, pull tight and slip stitch into top of first HCD, fasten off
(grey yarn) 8 single crochets in magic ring, pull tight and slip stitch into top of first single crochet.  Attach to smaller black lens and sew onto hat
TADA!  You're done!!
Any questions, lemme know!
Peace and Blessings
Beth

BB-8! I have a couple of nephews (and a grown-up sister-almost-in-law) who would love this hat! This is wonderful! Thank you for the tutorial! I don't do much crochet, but it's nice to know that, if I ever have the urge to start, I can try this out. Smiley

Looking for poly-clay earrings: one bacon, one fried egg. Also, a mishmash of red/orange/gold bracelets--beaded, braided, bangles, whatever! If you have the supplies, let's talk! (Please?) I'll swap all kinds of things in return!

Excellent job, and BB8's head just happens to be the perfect shape for a hat to begin with, so it works beautifully!

I like Kit-Kat, unless I'm with 4 or more people.
