I recently returned from a fabulous Icon workshop with Andrea Matus and Michael deMeng in Cortona, Italy.  On the top of my "things I need to do" list has long been a wish to do an art workshop with the Maestro deMeng as well as visit Tuscany so this was a great opportunity to do both!  We spent 2 days on collage with Andrea and even though I've been cutting and glueing for many years, I learned lots of new tricks as well as gilding (I want to gild ALL THE THINGS now) Then another couple of days on the frame assemblage with fragments/stuff I found at an antique market in Arezzo, stuff I brought from home and souvenirs I picked up in Florence.  Again learned a lot about the Dremel (always had one but never used it) and how to use the incredible Aves Apoxy Clay-now this stuff is a revelation!

The finished piece, the outside frame measures about 12" by 20"  I intend to put candles on the top of David and Venus

Detail showing the depth

Collage detail-yummy hand marbled papers I found at Il Papiro in Cortona, Italian dictionary papers and some cut up tin angel wings that I applied and painted

An unfortunate transit accident

Aves Apoxy clay to the rescue!

Repaired and repainted

The outside frame is covered with fragments (4 pieces) on the bottom and the one semi round on top from the antique market that are adhered with Aves Apoxy clay-also used it to sculpt around the pieces to meld them together.  The flat frame showing on the sides has Dap applied on them for texture, all the flatter wood decorative pieces I brought from home, as well as the skull (plastic halloweenie skull, rusted and painted), the clamp ring (painted to look like verdigris).  The rusty disc is an awesome piece of rusty Italian crap I found in the communal class junk box.

There are way too many wonderful details in this piece!  From the found pieces to the finishes...looks like you got what you sought by attending the classes!

I really love how you used so many things that aren't what they used to be...and the clay parts...

Goes to show that one needs to keep EVERYTHING!!

Fabulous job...thanks for sharing the process and a couple of the techniques you used...

Wow! Great piece. I love the patina on the wings.
I'm so jealous that you got to take a class with Michael deMeng. I have been a fan for years.

She's fabulous!  I loved reading about your trip (and seeing all of the photos)!  You've inspired me to add cooking class to my travel itinerary.   Smiley

Gorgeous, both your collage and your assemblage. That was the trip of a lifetime!

And I totally agree on the Apoxie Sculpt! Ever since I took a class with Michael DeMeng, it's on my must-have list. Love it.
