I've got some great purple satin and I'm thinking of making one... the bodice part won't be too hard, I've done similar things before, and if I do a seam at the waist, it'll be even easier... but what sort of shape should I use for the skirt?  Obviously I'll need a lot of extra material for the gathers, but should I go with a circle-skirt shape, or more rectangular panels?

definitely flared ("circular") rather than flat panels (rectangles).  notice that the bodice is gored--it narrows at the waist and then you can see the flare start above and below.  this indicates a round shape rather than squared.  it looks to me like there are 20 gores total, 10 front and back.  you can make the skirt as full as you want, up to a double circle if you so choose.
