So my oldest niece turned 18 on the 24th (yay!) and she wanted a steampunk purse as a present from me. I asked her to send me a picture of something she liked, and this is what she sent:

I started by trying to find a metal purse closure, but couldn't find one similar, so got this:

Then I couldn't figure out how to make the bag shape while using the handle . . . THEN the wondrous queenofdiy gave me some links to the right hardware and THIS wonderful pattern for a doctor's bag (which was what that bag my niece liked is actually called) http://swoonpatterns.com/?s=nora&submit=Search
I highly recommend the pattern - there are lots of pieces, lots steps and it's a bit fiddly to put together, but if you follow the directions, it's not TOO hard, and it comes out great! (If I do say so myself. . .  Roll Eyes  )

So I wound up making this for my niece - she told me what fabrics she liked out of several links to various fabric websites that I sent her. (The keys and gears fabric came from equilter, the black pleather came from Joann's)
Here it is:
Front

Back

Close up of pocket with gears and a key sewn on

Inside

A key I attached to the zipper

And I decided to make a small change purse to go with it:

inside (with my hand for size reference - it's tiny!)

Sorry this is so long and picture overload, but it was quite the project and I am very happy with how it came out!  Grin

Thanks! I am looking forward to making another one - I am thinking of making it 3/4 the size and maybe doing something different with the straps . . .
