I woke up at 4am this morning and foolishly read facebook. Sweets4ever posted a reminder about this challenge and suddenly I decided I HAD to enter. So what if I'm packing everything I won into a 30kg luggage allowance to move back across the world? So what if I really can't justify buying any more groceries before I go?

Once upon a time there was a wizard named Nigel. He wasn't a very good wizard, unfortunately. It would have been better for him if he'd been an accountant, but wizarding was the family business and so, therefore, he was a wizard. His great aunt had become quite famous with her luring of small children to their deaths via gingerbread cottage. Desperately needing to move out of his parents basement Nigel thought he'd try that. Unfortunately, Nigel is not a very good wizard. The gingerbread? Well, it wasn't ginger. Nutmeg and cinnamon. Tasty enough, but not the classic. Walls studded with candy? The best Nigel could manage was dried fruit. Mainly figs.
He moved in just before Christmas and enjoyed his first peaceful holiday ever. Unfortunately his guttering broke Christmas Night and building in the deep dark forest during the holiday season isn't the best way to get a plumber out.

I love the story and the dried fruit, so much better for you than candy! I always wondered about bears when living in an almost gingerbread house. Now that would be a wake up! A bear eating his way into your bedroom.

That's a pretty impressive build for making it on such short notice and with what you had on hand.  Cool back story too (I like the implication that the witch from Hansel and Gretel is Nigel's Great Aunt)!  Nigel should have more faith in himself; I feel that the dried fruit makes for excellent-looking windows.

@cmarion3:  I never thought of that either--you would think a candy house would attract nearly every forest creature for miles.  They must put a special repellant enchantment on it when they erect it--mages are clever like that.

Now, maybe the forest creatures are just smart enough not to mess with witches and wizards.

I like Kit-Kat, unless I'm with 4 or more people.

Your use of unconventional gingerbread house "candies" is inspiring. Great job on executing a creative and impressive house in no time flat!

Nigel is not talented enough a mate to add protection spells (evidenced by his broken guttering). Maybe Bears and other predators like to encourage the luring of prey to the forest. Maybe Hansel and Gretel made it to the oven because all the Bears were full that day?
