I altered a store bought sweater to make TheManFlesh a Krampus sweater!

I remembered a decades old Martha Stewart Magazine craft about stitching with a needle and yarn over the existing knit of a sweater and decided to give it a whirl to make a tacky Krampus sweater. I used an image of a sweatshirt printed to look like a sweater as a guide, some yellow thread to mark the center of the sweater, and went to town. It took hours and hours and was kind of a pain in the @$$, but I am really pleased with how it turned out! The photo below is probably the most accurate color.

I might end up giving it to him early since we're going to a party on Sunday night and his last day of work for the year is tomorrow and we are staying home in Montana for the Christmas.

Here is a close up of the stitches. I used a sock-weight yarn. I don't knit or crochet, so that's about all I can tell you about the yarn other than it's a cotton blend and the sweater is a wool blend.

That is ridiculously cool! It looks like a knit pattern but you basically cross stitched it! Smiley Rock on with your Krampus self! Smiley

Thanks so much, you two!

I saw it in her magazine, literally 18-20 years ago, and just remembered it. It was basically use the yarn you want to stitch over the Vs of the knitted item's existing stiches. That is what I did. I think one could used a cross stitch or latch hook pattern to make a design, but in my case the Vs of the sweater are wider than they are tall, so a pattern for stitches are the same height and width would need to be altered to compensate.

I had to look up what a Krampus was, but now that I know, I really like the sweater! And, I love the technique that you used and I'd  like to give that a shot. Maybe I could make one of those trendy (or tacky) silhouette sweaters.

Thanks! Fun tradition, isn't it. I have been considering some trendy/tacky options for myself!

Best Christmas sweater ever!

Thank you!

I can usually spot your posts just from the thumbnails, MistressT, but I didn't get this one! I don't think it's tacky at all - really it's coolness personified. And the technique is amazing - I wouldn't have spotted it as fake knitting, even in the close-up photo.

God bless Martha!

Thanks, Wulf!  I think in person it is convincingly knitted-looking, at least from the outside. The inside is a hot mess! Gotta love good ol' Martha!

Krampus! My husband wants us to go to a Krampus parade next year. Perhaps I'll be making him a shirt too, but a sweater like this looks a bit too ambitious. I love it and especially with the German text.

OH my the quality of this is out of the world. Do you remember the link to the martha instructions. I am curious to try my hand at this.... so many possibilities if you make your own.... LOVE IT!

This technique is called duplicate stitch and is widely used in knitting! Smiley Here's a good video on the technique: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cfmjyaaAdw

Thanks for sharing this information! I'm a little nervous to look and see all the things I didn't do "right." But since I think I want to try it again, I should look, because it will probably make it easier.

ADDENDUM: Holy moly! That method would be way faster and easier than the way I went about stitching all those Vs! Next time...

Ah well, I believe the only benefit to using the duplicate stitch method is saving some yarn. Smiley The final result you achieved was wonderful, regardless of the method.

I am pleased with the result, but I love efficiency and will try to remember this method if I ever tackle a project like this again!
