I picked this blank antler monogram F nearly a year ago and FINALLY got around to decorating it for our driveway gate.

It's copper leaf on the monogram and diluted artist acrylic paint on the antlers. Both are coated with exterior grade topcoats.

I have a couple more in different shapes to swap out through the year, but they aren't all finished yet.

So beautiful. And so handy about the "F"s.
Why do the edges look vermillion? Is it a reflection or a different color there?

Thank you! I have loved monograms since forever so it's great that The ManFlesh and I share one!

I painted the F, including the sides, with red oxide acrylic before applying the leaf. It must just be brighter in the photo. More traditional under color for gold leaf, but liked the look so went with it!

The copper really stands out. It's fancy, like your turkey.

Really nice, reminds me my gate needs painting.

Will the copper leaf verdigris, or will the topcoat prevent that?  Would look great either way!

Thanks. Topcoat, but even that oxidized it a little so we'll see! I'll be OK either way.

This is the perfect addition to your entry.
The copper paint looks like real copper. Is it shiny?

It's not paint, it's copper leaf... super-duper, crazy thin metal in small squares and I think it is some kind of copper alloy if not actual copper. And yes super shiny!

So, it's like the domes on top of the building in Paris that are covered with very thin small sheets of gold, except it's copper instead. Probably better, gold would be too much. Now, I have to look  these  thin metal sheets up on the web. I want some too.

Yes, similar. Or like old timey business names on window or fancy frames on paintingsin a museum, etc. Speedball makes all the supplies under the Mona Lisa brand. The metal squares come in between pages of a book and I believe that is why they are called leaves, but I am not entirely sure about that. Paint that is called "gold leaf" is just imitating this look and not a true metal leaf.

You can get gold and silver leaf that is not true gold or silver at a much better price, but the gold will need to be topcoated to prevent oxidation. Of course that would be the case with real silver, too.
