I just got my mom's old singer circa 1970s.  Its a great machine and I took it because it is great at freemotion (the one time i checked it out and saw it worked great).

Now I can't get freemotion going.  I have the manual and did everything:

  • took the pressure off the darning thingie at the top
  • moved the feed dogs to down position
  • removed the pressure foot (manual shows there isn't one for embroidry/freemotion)
  • tried to pull the bottom thread through to the top to start and that just won't work.

Any ideas on how a) I can pull the bottom thread through? and b) what else I might be doing wrong? Huh

Thanks!

have you cleaned and oiled it recently?  there might be thread, lint, or gunk built up that's preventing movement.
Even if you're not using the machine much, it should be cleaned and oiled occasionally.
