My DIL and grandson would like bags made out of my son's old coast guard uniforms. He's an officer now and left me with his old ones. Very sturdy navy fabric. The bags sell for quite a bit on Etsy, custom made but still....

Here's the first bag, just a simple string backpack/book bag for my grandson. Took me a bit as I made it up as I went and the fabric is pretty tough to sew through on multi layer areas. These string backpacks are pretty simple, it was figuring out how to use the shirt to the best advantage. But it was a good way to get used to the fabric and the issues I may run into making the bigger bag for my DIL.

And the original shirt complete with sweat stains.

And the very happy recipients.

What a lovely bag for your grandson to have. He must be so proud. And you too because you did a very good job of cutting the fabric to get the best out of it.  I know those tough fabrics are hard to sew but it will last forever.

It turned out great!  I like how you used the buttonhole tabs for the cords on the bottom.  Did you try using a denim needle to get through those tough layers?

I did use a needle for thick fabrics. I forget the numbers. But this material is a very tight weave, sort of rip-stop type, non-cotton (or maybe just a little cotton) type fabric. Very tight weave. All the labels are washed out so I can't read them. I just have to be very careful not to let the seams get too thick.

The next bag is a tote type bag with outside and inside pockets, but I am using a cotton for the lining, which cuts down on the weight.
