My local community centre in Hoole, Chester, recently won a large fund to renovate the centre and create a cafe for people to use for workshops and all sorts of events. When the University asked them if they could work with them to create some artwork for the new cafe space they agreed and they asked me, as a local artist, to help with the project. How could I resist? Grin

We've still got another week or two to finish it up but I'm so excited with how it's coming along! We've been working on it every Tuesday for 4 hours. The only brief was that it had to capture stories of the local Hoole & Chester area and it had to fit above the fireplace in the cafe.

Here's a current photo...

And how it all started. With a frame! (actually the inspiration started with part of a rabbit hutch I had and a lot of discussion and debate to get to this point Cheesy)

Making and adding the 'branches' for it.

Before covering them with papier mache

Then tearing map pages for the background. We covered them with white tissue to cover some of the map and to add texture.

Before sketching out some of the areas of Chester into oblong areas. Lots of discussion about whethere the areas were going to be accurate to their actual locations or not, and we decided on switching them around.

Hatching plans to rag rug the river

Rag rug river positioning

Glueing down, and starting to wrap 'branches'

Wrapping the stories around the 'branches'

Working on the little details, stories and photos that will bring the piece to life!

Defenition to the outside of the oval areas

Lots of details added to the zoo area

Zoo - top right, Hoole - (local area where the centre is) lower centre & City Centre - within the Roman cardboard walls Cheesy

And up to this week where we've been working on adding more details to the rest of the areas

Grosvenor Gardens (doily area)

And with me, for scale! Cheesy

It's been great to work with the community and the univesity to create this and I know the community centre is going to love having it on their wall in the new cafe!

The result is striking even before one knows any details about the meaning or the process! After you know some details, it's just that much more impressive.

Wonderfully collaborative! Though I still see your style peeking through... Wink

I'm sure this piece will be treasured by all those who touched it and are touched by it.
