A friend and former music director of our church recently died unexpectedly. We decided to give the congregation the opportunity to write messages on prayer flags and hang in our memorial garden until summer. Since it was my idea, I volunteered to sew the flags. We estimated we would need about a 100 + flags.

I raided my stash and came up with 4 of the pastels we wanted to use and a quick trip to the fabric store scored the other two colors. Yellow, pink, blue, green, peach and lavendar...all spring colors. Finals were 8" x 5".

I tore 11" strips, two from each color. I ironed over a 3 inch hem and sewed across the width doing a bit of a back stitch dance at each 5 " mark and cut 5 inch widths. Luckily most cottons come in 45" widths so I got 9 out of each strip. Some were slightly shorter, so I just spread the difference over several flags.

We supplied waterproof pens and oil crayons and a covered table for two Sundays. Everyone appreciated the chance to say goodbye and send their wishes. We used about 65 of the flags. Now that the snow has melted to a manageable level, I will be putting on my boots and traipsing out to hang some flags.

I zigzaged the flags, about 13 per 9 foot length of clothesline, figuring that we could tie them together as needed and tie to additional rope around the trees. I've strung flags before and in the wind they tend to slide to the center so the zigzagging will hold them in place and make them easier to hang.

This is so special. The result is beautiful and I bet it helped the congregation heal.

Your colour choices were great - they look good together and will be beautiful in the sun. The zigging was a good solution. My friend in BC who does prayer flags pins them to the string with small safety pins for the same reason - they won't stay put.

The flags were hung today just before the memorial service. Lots of music and remembrances. And it snowed all day...no accumulation just lazy flakes falling all day. The flags were a splash of color in the memorial garden. It was a wonderful way to help people send their messages.

A truly heartfelt project.  Deepest sympathies on the passing of your friend.
