My earliest crafting memory - an introduction to dressmaking  Smiley
During the early 70s my Mums sister, Auntie Maggie lived with us. I can't be 100% on my age at the time but I would have been around 4 or 5 as she lived with us prior to the birth of my younger sister but moved on before we moved house after the birth of brother #1. I remember being allowed to help pin the pattern tissue to the fabric for a dress she was making herself. The sofa and chairs were pushed back against the walls of the living room to make room on the carpet for laying out the fabric. It was a pale blue floral print, I can still see it in my minds eye even though I can never remember seeing Auntie Maggie wear the finished dress. My Mum has always been one to embrace new gadgets and technology and so the actual cutting of the fabric was done with electric scissors something like these - exciting!

Hmm exciting until Auntie Maggie was finished cutting and asked me to unplug them which I did without switching them off ( I was a kid, I didn't know!) I yanked the plug and apparently touched the prongs - OUCH seems to be an understatement,I can remember tingling all along my arm & I couldn't let go of them!
Needless to say I've got a buzz from crafting ever since  Grin

Your stories are so great!

Lots of traditions passed on by crafting moms, grans, and aunties!

I am sure we all have memories of accidents, big fails, excitement over getting new crafting supplies or tools.

As we craft this year, let's be mindful of everyone who contributed to our love of crafting.  Perhaps as you craft, another memory will come up that you will want to share.

The lists are looking good! I hope to finish my first project for 2015 this weekend and post the rest of my 2014 projects (it has been grey and ugly here, so I have been in no mood to take pictures!).

I grew up in a crafty family, so I've been crafty since before I can remember.

When visiting my dad's parents, I remember playing with some blocks my grandmother had for planning out quilts, and when visiting my mom's parents, I remember being fascinated with my grandmother's knitting.  We had various crafty things to do at home, like the Woodles - they were small-ish, flat wooden shapes that you could paint and glue together, and make magnets and things.  Play-doh was banned in our house, though (we had carpets).

In grade 5 we did a unit on transportation and one piece of homework was to make a vehicle out of things found at home, and while my classmates all brought in tissue-box cars and things, I had an airplane made out of a spark plug, a tongue depressor, a Popsicle stick, and some Lego wheels.  (Dad helped with the materials acquisition!)

Mom liked to make things with plastic canvas, then later really wanted to learn cross stitching, but wasn't sure how to go about it.  When I was 11 I went to a summer camp and learned some basics of cross stitch, and came home and taught mom.  (And boy, did she ever run with it!)

I remember doing a lot of crafts with Brownies and Girl Scouts...also at Vacation Bible School. My great grandma taught me how to do patchwork and quilt (she saved every scrap of fabric!)...my mom taught me to crochet, knit and sew...I had fabulous art teachers as well and learned to draw and paint from about age 4.

The only crafting I did as a teenager was sewing...I had to sew my own clothes and prom dresses as we were living in foreign countries and my parents had little money to spare. lol I remember making a jacket from old curtains but they had fiberglass (like insulation material!) so the jacket was so itchy!

Mio--how fabulous that you taught your mom!

I remember my dad making etchings on deer and elk antlers when I was a kid.  I made a few but my drawing skills were not very good and they still aren't!

I started crafting at a very young age.  I was always fascinated by glue and scissors, and some of my earliest memories involve looking thru my mom's collection of sewing buttons.  My collection now outpaces hers even at its height.  Roll Eyes  My mom started teaching me to sew when I was about 7 and I've been doing it since. You'd think I'd be better at it, but I do ok.  I made a lot of my clothes in high school, and took advanced sewing classes.  Making blue jeans is the worst!  Never again, I say!

I remember hand sewing quilt bindings with my grandma as a teen, and attending a lot of quilting bees with my mom.  One of my favorite things I made was a Christmas tree composed of little felt pieces arranged and glued onto a large piece of burlap.  It was hideous but I loved it.  It eventually got mildewed and I had to get rid of it.  It was a sad day.

It's nice reading about everyone's crafty history Grin
Ooh bunny I love buttons! I have a small collection myself but my mom has a decent sized one. Though she does envy one set of buttons I have. They're some mother of pearl buttons I got off a ratty looking shirt that I got for $1 at Goodwill just for its buttons.
My mom says the first thing I sewed was a hole in my pillowcase at around seven and said shame on me for not mentioning my other aunt's knitting or my crochet.  Embarrassed
My dad's older sister knitted and I was fascinated with it but could never get the hang of it. When I was about 12 my mom taught me the chain and single stitch in crochet and for a while I would make coasters because it was all I knew how to do. Then about six years (or seven?) ago I picked up a copy of Reader's Digest Guide to Needlework and played around with other stitches but never really could get the hang of them. I want to say it was about three/four years ago that I finally was able to get a hang on other stitches and started making things other than coasters! Cheesy
