I read in one swap that the organizer will have a contest in the gallery at the end of the swap. Everyone can vote for their favorite/best piece. She offers to send the winner a prize. I can't seem to find any information about this sort of thing on the info boards. (The contest announcement was added after many members had already signed up). Personally I feel weird about it. I don't want to say anything to the organizer if there is not a problem with them doing this, but pitting the participants against one another, essentially, can be very intimidating. One thing I love about swaps is that everyone's work gets "oohed" and "ahhed" over and no one is really singled out as being the "best". I feel a little bit of a moral dilemma here. What do you think?

I read that too, and thought the same thing.  I had thought that the organizer, being new to organizing, was perhaps trying out something new.  Maybe because she was so excited about organizing.  But I agree, it is kind of pitting one swap package against another.  It would also be very difficult to be honest, I think...I mean each person would basically have to vote for the package that his/her partner sent or risk hurting someone's feelings.

I agree with you, candice.  I don't think swaps should be competitive.   Lips sealed  There are plenty of challenges and other competitions elsewhere on Craftster.

I kinda like the "best in show" aspect. The only way to improve upon one's skill is to be challenged, not only personally, but  some do better with external challenge, like competition.

It's all meant to be in good fun, so I don't see why anyone would take it so personally if they did not win.

I don't think swaps should be a competition.  I've always felt swaps were a way for me to bring some joy into my partner's life.  One should do their very best for their partner anyhow.  You grow as a crafter w/each swap.  I never ever viewed swaps as a competition.  At this very moment, I'm utilizing a rarely used skill, because I couldn't find a pattern in my preferred medium/skill set, that I'm most proficient in.

I also remember reading that too & thought it was kind of strange for her/him to say that. I had never heard that before. I don't think it should be competitive. I agree with the most of you. It's just fun to make something for your partners & of course it's fun to hear the ooh's & ahh's, but not to actually have competition.

Okay ladies, I wish you had mentioned this to me earlier Wink. I am sure i mentioned it in the swap idea forum when listing the swap idea. I am quite fine in not offering a prize. It was not my intention to "pit" one against the other at all. I guess I was using the prize as an incentive for your very best work, and as a kind of a thankyou for putting so much time into a project.-6 weeks-
I will post in the swap forum about the situation and we will sort out what to do. Im a team player, so whatever everyone is comfortable with.

While offering a contest and prize is a new idea (and one that I think could actually be fun), obviously it rubs some people the wrong way. Thanks to Alittlemusthave for working to put a new twist on swapping, and for being open to the needs and suggestions of others. I'm glad this is sorted out.  Smiley
