Winters can be brutal in central Pennsylvania so I decided to make some hats for the men in my life based on this old pattern that was used to keep fishermen's ears warm in New England.

The ear flap parts are made flat and then folded over to make the hat extra warm...ears can get frostbite so easily if exposed to harsh weather for too long!

The hat turned out a tad too big for hubby, but another friend snatched it up. I am currently working in a few more.

The hat is fairly easy to make and works up quickly.

Thanks!

The yarn is Drops cotton/merino...very soft and spongy...hubby is a Penn State fan so this was why I chose this dark navy color...more yarn is on the way so I can make him one that fits his small head! Grin

I have the opposite problem to your hub - my head's too big for most hats! I love the texture of this one - I've always had problems finding a knit cap that I liked. My current favourite is one I got in a swap years ago, I think from Mamaneedles. And the dark navy IS a lovely colour.

Thanks everyone!  This is such an easy, relaxing knit...and I am in love with the yarn and have ordered quite a bit of it.

Even though I went down two needles sizes for the second hat, hubby still thinks the hat is too big!!  I think it is just because he likes a really snug hat whereas I like them to be looser...oh well, he said he would wear it anyway...

hmmm...I seem to have enough yarn to make one more navy hat... Wink Grin
