I've participated in several swaps now and am wrapping up my first non-paper swap.  I started wondering what motivates everyone to participate.  Is it the challenge of the theme?  Sending something to someone who (hopefully!) will appreciate it?  Is it to have everyone oooo and ahhh over the pics of your item in the gallery?  Just because you really want something in return?  (be honest, no judgments here!  Grin)

Soooooooooo, why do you swap?? Cheesy

I"m a craftaholic on the road to recovery.

Just kidding!!!  I'm on the road to the craft store.  Cheesy

For the non-competitive challenge of crafting on a theme, and sharing.  Smiley

I love to make things and I never make them for myself. When I swap, I get to make things for people and I receive something extra special in return! It's like a win-win for me!

Great way of expressing it.  I like the challenge of the theme and the time line, I like stalking and planning a package around what inspires me from the stalking process.  I like crafting for a person who is like minded and can appreciate hand crafted goods, and understands the effort and thought that goes into them.  Also, I like to be challenged, and crafting for swaps has given me incentive to try new things; new media, and different techniques.

Oh my, where do I start? Here? Okay!

I love swapping just for the sheer fact of making someone else's day (hopefully that is XD since I dont have a whole lot of confidence anyway haha) It's nice to have something to do for someone else that takes your mind off the daily grind/struggle and look forward to giving someone something they will hopefully truly love =) That and I find it easier to craft for others than myself ha ha ha

Totally agree with this as my main reason, I have others though
*it encourages me to stretch myself and challenge me to try new things/improve learnt crafts
*I like getting to know my partners and making something I hope will make them smile
*I LOVE receiving fun post! (As a teenager I had lots of penpals) and the excitement of waiting for the postman to come (without having spent money directly on myself!)
*it is such great fun!

I now have an Etsy shop selling my genuine gemstone wirework jewellery - Pretty Twisted Gems
My craft blog. If you are swapping with me be warned this may contain spoilers

Crafting reduces a lot of stress for me.  I like making others happy.  Sometimes it's nice to learn new things.  Crafting is an outlet for my creative energy.  Besides, "Idle hands do the devils's work."   Wink

I am new here but I have participated in private journal page group swaps before. I think its not only the thought of someone hopefully loving what ive made, but also that special package that comes to me. Its like Christmas.
Plus the thought of someone having sat down for maybe hours creating, knowing that they are making it for someone they have never met and they wont be able to keep it, its just such a great thing.
Im very excited I cant wait to start swapping.

Honestly, the answer for me depends largely on the swap.

Obviously, I love to craft and make art and I LOVE dealing with people who appreciate the effort you put in.

When it comes to different types of swaps, for some, I enjoy the theme element, both in the giving and receiving (especially since no one in my world crafts).  For others, I enjoy the fun of shipping and receiving lots of fun things (like the sweat shop swaps).  For some of them, like OWS or OGS, I love giving handmade gifts but have exhausted a lot of my wheelhouse for them and I know there are others who feel the same, so to me each claim in like the OGS ends up benefiting at least 4 people - me, my swap partner, the person who receives what I made (hopefully!), and the person who I gift what my swap partner made.  Win win win win  Cheesy

I also like the relationships you can build, especially over lengthy or big swaps like the 13 Days of Christmas, as well as in the ongoing or recurring swaps like SSS and OW/GS.  You get a sense of community plus awesome stuff - what's not the love?!  Grin

Swapping up a storm here!  Totally open to personal swaps - I am always in need of awesome stuff Wink

For myself, I have a hard time justifying make "non-usable items" for myself. My parents are both minor hoarders, and the idea of surrounding myself with items that don't serve a purpose on a regular basis stresses me out. I can handle having some, but not a lot. I mostly sew clothes for work because they can be justified, and most of my knitting is given away.

But I still want to make the cute and "useless"(I use the term VERY loosely) things, and if I'm making it for someone else who actually wants it, that's fantastic!! I have the satisfaction of having made it, I can admire it and can gift it to someone who will (hopefully) love and appreciate it in ways that I am not able to.
