What about threading the grid with one strand?

lindy - If you do try gridding, don't use regular thread or embroidery floss. It's easy to stitch into the guide threads, and then you won't be able to pull them out. I'd suggest using Sulky Sliver thread. It's a thin, flat ribbon-like thread that is easy to see, your floss/thread won't get caught in it, and it's a lot easier to remove when you're done stitching. You can find it with the sewing thread at JoAnn.

Thanks all! You guys are awesome! I'm almost done with this project but I have had to pull out SO many stitches and start over. All these ideas will really help for next time!
