I've been meaning to craft some sort of portable sewing kit for some time now, as I often find myself transporting tools around to workshops or other crafty events and inevitably wind up losing stuff in my bag, or getting stuck by loose pins!

So for this challenge, I took a pillowcase and created a traveling sewing supplies mat:

It holds a ruler, seam gauge, marking pencil, fabric scissors, and a seam ripper. It has a mini-pincushion, a little pocket for a measuring tape, and a wooden dowel which holds two spools of thread. I also filled in the empty space on the right with a matching zippered pouch for any extra notions I might need. (The design is completely original - didn't even search for inspiration ideas, just knew what I wanted and sketched it out! Smiley)

Here's the case I started with (after I cut it open):

Picked it up at the by-the-pound store, so it was super cheap! I love this color, and especially the detail trim around the edge.

Detail shots:

I really liked that trim that was on the top edge of the pillowcase. Since I only used about half of the main fabric to make the mat, I cut the top edge off of the extra piece and attached it to the right side of the mat to make a nice frame. The empty panels on the end also allow for it to roll up nicely!

The extra fabric was also a thrift store find. I like the contrasting texture and complimentary colors of it.

The measuring tape pocket is sewn pillow-sham style, with two overlapping flaps so the tape stays in place, yet I can pull the end out easily.

The pin cushion is extra poofy, and sort of pulls the material out of place, but I think it will come in handy! In retrospect, I might have attached a piece of cardboard underneath to keep the pins from sticking through.

I wanted to be able to cut off a piece of thread without removing it from its place. I cut a 3/4 in. diameter dowel down to size (6 inches) and it is held on by elastic loops. It's long enough to hold two standard spools.

The pouch is lined with extra pillowcase material.

And it rolls up super nice! I tried to plan it so the larger items (scissors, pin cushion, thread) would all fall into a separate vertical "plane" I guess, so it isn't too bulky or awkward. I also used extra pillowcase thread to make the ties.

Now I can simply gather my tools, roll them up, and throw them into my bag without worrying about anything falling out!  Cheesy

Thanks for looking!

I love how you managed to tuck the essentials into a compacted and organized system!

(I need to make something similar for my embroidery goodies so I can keep my supplies and project wrapped and clean when not in use.)

Great idea!
