Hook like there's no tomorrow.

This afghan is made from a free pattern published in Crochet! Magazine as a Web Bonus from April 2012.
It was designed by Susan Lowman, (who many of you may know from her fabulous Wiggly Crochet patterns - that's where I 'discovered' her anyway.) Here's her Ravelry page with the pattern info.
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/majestic-butterfly-afghan

It's tunisian crocheted with a Susan Bates Size J Silvalume extended crochet hook.
It's made mostly with I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby.
There's also Red Heart Frost Green for the leaves.
Coats and Clark Wiggles yarn in purple on the butterfly and pink on the flower. (This gives some really nice textures to the afghan).
Finally, for the border there's Decadence Yarn Bee yarn in the color Peridot Twist, (also from Hobby Lobby.) I wanted the border to look like grass with bit's of flowers speckled into it and looking like you were high above it like the butterfly and huge flowers in the design.

When I started this, I wanted a project to take my mind off things going on in my family. My Mom had just been brought to the hospital and diagnosed with a faulty heart valve. She is now in a nursing home and in the process of "actively dying". It's so painful to see her this way and I know I can't do anything to help her now but visit her and give her comfort and support; and so I crochet.

Last week, my Mother-in-law has been put in a nursing home. Her mind is failing and she can no longer take care of herself. My husband came home over the weekend after seeing her and it kills me to see his pain and anguish. I can't do anything about it but give him comfort and support; and so I crochet.

And now, as if this was not enough, our dog of 12 years died yesterday in a vet hospital we drove to that was open, (thank God!), at three in the morning!!!!!! My children grew up with this dog. She'd been a part of our family for so long. We're just now going through the "she's not there" moments as this day unfolds and it's so hard.

I know you all have a million things going on in your lives as well. This is all part of life. When these things start to happen all at once it can be very overwhelming. This is what's happening to us. But i know we aren't alone. I'm sorry to be such a bummer. (I think I need a new project to crochet.)

Thank goodness there is the internet - and Craftster - and places to talk about our projects and our lives. I know crocheting can be a very lonely introverted hobby. I know I myself shut people out to concentrate on projects - especially difficult ones. But at least there is this community out there - and others like it - that, when we do feel like sharing and communicating, getting inspiration and advice, and just some simple praise from others who share the same passion and interests and can appreciate what we've made, it makes it all worth it.

This is the front.

This is the back.

Yikes! You are going through so much in your life all at once.  Crochet has always been an outlet for me too and this blanket will also be a lasting reminder of everything you have gone through and how strong human spirit can really be.  Smiley

Now; your Magnificent Butterfly Afghan is exactly that!  Magnificent!  The colors you chose are very complementary and it is very warm and calming.  I absolutely adore it!

This piece is absolutely stunning, pesky pixie!  And it's a testament to your strength and fortitude as your family goes through such difficult times.  I'm sorry for your anguish and hope that you and your family find a bit of peace and comfort in each day.

Oh, I'm so sorry about the grief in your life right now.  I hope you and your loved ones can lean on each other and derive comfort as best you can

The afghan is stunning - you have so much skill!  I'm quite envious.

That is just beautiful. I may have to break my "no afghans" rule. Smiley (which exists only because I don't do well with large projects)

Thank you for sharing the pictures but thank you also for sharing your stories. Crochet may be lonely but you are not alone in using it to get through times like this (I speak from experience here Smiley ) and both the crochet and the sharing can ease some of the pain of loss that you're going through. I hope things get better for you soon.

What an amazing project!  Definitely had to hit "this rocks!"

Crocheting can be such a calming, peaceful hobby.  I put it right up there with my gardening & writing in having miracle powers to bleed off anxiety and depression.

That is amazing! Well done for following it so well. I can't do tunisian, yet.
Thank-you, also for putting the image of the back - I always wonder what backs look like in cross-stitch, and other projects.

I'm late in commenting on this, but it just so fantastic that I had to say so.  I hope things get better for you and your family, so often things seem to come in groups like your story.

That is gorgeous!  It would be pretty nifty as a wall tapestry too.  Was it hard to work on with the color changes?

You're an incredibly strong person.  :e-hugs:  I hope life gets less stressful for you soon.

My thoughts are with your family. Your afghan is beautiful and amazing detail. One of the most beautiful crocheted blankets I have ever seen.

I just recently started learning how to crochet so I can make blankets for a charity I run a chapter of called The Binky Patrol and envy your skill.
