I just had another thought... a gift that may do some good, make you feel good, and be a gift that you could feel good about giving... give something to a good cause in their name.  It could be a straight out donation.  But if you want it to be crafty there are things like blankets and toys for animal shelters.  Warm clothing items, blankets, toys for family and womens shelters, homeless shelters, charities that take art/craft goods and sell/auction to raise monies, care packages for soldiers overseas, hats, mitts, blankets for preemies at the hospitals, lapghans, lapquilts for the aged at nursing homes, or the hospital.  It may also encourage good works to spread in the season of giving too.

I am starting to line things up for the holidays and love these suggestions.  This is a fantastic idea.

After many years of tearing my hair out regarding what to give the in-laws, I handed that responsibility over to DH.  He is in charge of things for his side of the family, including calls, invites, and gifts (within reason on those gifts).  It has saved my sanity.

Yes, I like the idea of the hand made cards with pictures - personal, but not overly so, and inexpensive.  Food gifts can be easy and quick too - depending on what you make, you can do large batches too - cookies, spiced nuts, candies, loaves, mixes in jars (soups, hot chocolate, etc) - Many can also be done well in advance and frozen too - sometimes I like to make large batches so that I have extras for potlucks, unexpected guests, etc.

If you want to make hats or mittens, if you can find old wool sweaters at yard sales or thrift stores, you can full them in the washing machine and do simple cut and sewn accessories with them.

I like the food gift idea. It is the most practical. Big batches can be made, and they shouldn't be expensive to mail. You could also include a family picture inside the tin. (cover the cookies with waxed paper and lay the photo on top) The great thing about cookies is they can be as simple or as elaborate as you want to make them.

Years ago, my brother announced that he was donating to charity instead of giving gifts.  My whole family breathed a sigh of relief, and we haven't exchanged gifts since.

If you want to get fancy, you could make little cards that say something like, "In lieu of a gift you won't appreciate, are too stupid to understand and/or don't really want, a donation has been made to _____ charity."

You can change the wording to fit your attitude.
