I have recently started embroidering on thrift store pillowcases in stead of buying fabric, and i love it. Admittedly it shreds up your thread a little, but thread is quite a bit cheaper than fabric, so i am ok with that. Here are a couple of embroideries i did on  fabric from a 25 cent pillowcase from Salvi's-
