My parents were travelling out west last year and bought me a table runner kit for Christmas. I finally got around to putting it together. I'd never used a kit before and wasn't sure what to expect. Basically it came with all the fabric I needed and the applique was pre-traced, but otherwise it was just like making a normal quilt - I still had to cut everything to measure, cut out the applique and sew it on, piece the top, and do the actual quilting and binding.

Close-up of one orca (you can sort of see the quilting I did if you look closely at the outer border):

Did you have to applique all of the back and white pieces? This is really striking!  I have never tried a kit, but if they are like this one, I need to give it a go!

beautiful job!!

It looks great! I had the coolest shirt with an orca on it when I was a kid, this just reminded me of it! Cheesy

Did you have to applique all of the back and white pieces?

There's two layers to the applique - first there's just a white orca, and then the black orca-with-strategically-placed-holes got placed on top of the white one. The black one was done as one piece, believe it or not - it's held together by the tiniest bits of fabric in some places.

But yes, I did have to go around all the edges on the black one.

This is absolutely gorgeous!  For a table runner, what kind of batting did you use?  I'm assuming a very thin one? Nice job!
