I saw a napkin holder that is like a basket.  It is a square of plastic canvas and 4 narrow strips on all sides, covered with fabric.  The excess fabric on the corners are pinched together and tied with a little ribbon bow.  I think I've also seen this as a larger basket that can be used as a bread basket.

Couldn't find a pattern, but I've seen those. It looks like you make the plastic canvas thing with the sides flat (cut out the big bottom square, then cut out the side pieces, attach sides to the bottom but don't connect the sides to each other), then sew 3 sides of a square fabric together a little bigger than the plastic canvas with the ties sewn below each corner (2 ties per corner, one on each side); sew the 4th side of the fabric together with the remaining 2 ties, gather the ties and that should be a basket. You might have to do some stitching here or there to stabilize it, I dunno.

Thanks for your input.  I was thinking along the same line.  I believe I've also seen these baskets made a little larger to use for bread or rolls etc..
