Is there any way to turn blue jeans brown? I want brown pants for a steampunk look, and planned on altering some old jeans but blue jean is not steampunk. I've seen where bleach might do the trick, but I have no clue how to do it

Orange dye?, although you couldn't guarentee the shade with that.

Look twice, buy once. Nooooo
Look twice, decide I can make one instead.

I would just try some brown dye. They'd end up kind of purple-ish if they're very dark blue. If you want to guarantee the brown colour, then a colour-remover is the way to go as it doesn't degrade the fabric like bleach does.

Rit brand colour remover

If you scroll down and read the customer reviews, you'll get a lot of information regarding bleaching vs. colour removal and recommended methods.

Personally, I would do it on the stove in a glass pot so that it takes less of the powder to be effective. Just don't boil it unless you want your jeans to shrink Tongue

THere are a couple of tutorials how you can go about do this. Depending on how faded/bluer jean material you have..bleach them a couple of times till you get white color. I think the maximum it can take is 32 hours in bleach, wash and dry.

Buy some brown dye and dye your pants viola!

Hope it helps. Someone actually did this from jeans -> pastel color pants. I ll try to find that tutorial!

The FAQs section at the RIT site has some advice on what dye colors will cover which colors.
