Decided to do something a little more elaborate for me and my bf this year, and as we're both huge incurable fans of science fiction, I made us a pair of alien and astronaut costumes. First up is mine as a slightly retro-inspired astronaut:

I hand painted a stretchy zip front jumpsuit, repainted toy ray guns, custom painted accessories and my favorite bit, the helmet! I made it using a light fixture that I widened with a hacksaw and then fixed to a cardboard tube that I painted and lined with plumbing insulation.

I also repainted the patches and added on a gold and black flag patch, and recycled an old phone headset:

As much as I love my costume, I might love my bf's more:

His is black tactical clothing with bmx armor I repainted to look like metal, and then I did his makeup with an SFX prosthetic that I painted:

We didn't get a pic of it in full makeup but my favorite bit is the back:

Some detail shots, my bf's repainted nerf gun:

and the belt buckles I sculpted for both of us out of paper clay:

We had so much fun, and it was really surreal watching my bf walk around looking like he stepped off a movie set:

But I have to say that some things about a futuristic costume are not well-suited to a 2012 world:

Hope you enjoyed! Let me know if you have any construction questions. This was the first year I didn't have to sew anything so I learned a lot about more hardware type crafts and would be happy to share. Happy Halloween!

GREAT costumes - I'm sure you were a hit!  My question...how did you keep your helmet from fogging up?  Smiley

Thanks! There are actually small holes drilled all around the bottom of the globe near where it joins up to the collar. It did definitely fog up in especially hot rooms but it mostly did the trick.

Excellent costumes and makeup!

Where did you get the bubble lamp shade? Those are perfect for a helmet.
