I have this blah cotton trenchcoat I got at Old Navy.

I can't make it too flashy, because I still need to be able to wear it to work, but its so boring and blah and I need it to be a little interesting.

Any ideas on how to spruce it up a little?

You can do stencils on the lower panels... If the coat is black, you can add pretty stencils in demure colours and it will still look great. Or, if you're up for it, you buy a very strong and sharp needle, and you emrboider something, maybe a line of flowers along the sleeves?
Or adding some coloured ribbon to the sides?

You could change the lining of the coat to something bright and patterned?

Also changing the buttons would be subtle but effective.  Grin

Oh yes, coloured buttons will make a difference. You  could also make a new belt in the same colour as your new buttons.

Or just a big flower in a nice bright colour that you pin on the front side?

Good luck and keep us posted!  Smiley

How about some sort of subtle-but-flashy trim? You could hand sew a string of black sequins along the lapels, collar and cuffs. Or perhaps some black braided gimp.
