I'm sure this topic's been done to death on craftster, but after wading through the first 15 pages of threads and not finding what I wanted I decided to give up and post a new thread.

I reeeeeeally wanna start doing craft fairs and I know the best way to start is to just get in there and do it and a lot depends on the details of the space and whatnot so I'm just kinda looking for a general on average middle of the road baseline.

I want to have my stock of product before even signing up for a fair because I don't want to end up getting busy and not being able to have anything made. My products are aimed at people in their 20's-30's and right now are mostly baby/children's clothes/dress up/accessories and hairclips for adults and children (a lot of matching mommy and me bows, that kind of thing), all with kind of a funky/punk/rockabilly feel to them, some more subtle than others.

So my question is how much product should I have made up?

Right now I have 8 swaddlers (those things you put the baby in that tie up so you don't have to deal with folding up a regular blanket to swaddle), 8 crunchy taggies that match the swaddlers, 10 baby headbands, 5 onesies, 20 flower/bow hair clips, 5 rapunzel hair clip ons (long fake braid for dress up) and 10 coin purses.

Is this enough of each product? and should I add more products?

Keep in mind that this is just what I've made here and there over the past few months as I don't want to make a ton of product and have nothing sell. I am also planning on adding some "boy" things, like superhero capes, I just haven't gotten around to making them yet.

Any advise/opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

You have definitely a target market for your work, so you need to find craft fairs that attract that market. Generally craft fairs at schools will have the customers you're looking for.

How much to bring? I surely cannot tell how much of what item to bring, but a general rule of thumb is to set up your table at home, and fill it with your work so it looks attractive. Small items in the front, and larger items in the back. Then double what's there.

Now that's what most crafters do until you get a sense of what sells.

But will you sell enough to bring double stock today? Not in this economy! Craft shows/fairs are at the very front line of the economy here in the US. There's nothing in your booth anybody needs, so everything is an impulse buy. And when the customers don't have money, those impulse buys are the first thing to stop.

So if you're the type of person who loves interaction with strangers, who likes people watching, who isn't afraid to do a little work to make some money, this can be a great business to be in! Even in today's ecomonic mess.

There's NOTHING at a craft show, or on Etsy, anybody NEEDS. NOTHING.

Thanks for the advise!

I'm definately not looking to make this my sole income right now so I'm not expecting to sell out or anything like that, I just like making things and would like to try and make a little extra cash while getting some exposure and get to spend the day at a craft fair people watching and meeting new people. I also figure that anyone looking to buy stuff at a craft fair isn't really there for anything they NEED, I mean that's what you go to walmart for.

I have done a little bit of research and found that there is a market in my area for the style of things I make but thanks for mentioning the fairs at schools, I never would have thought that to be a good opertunity.

I also wouldn't have thought about setting up a trial run on a table at home, seems so obvious though. I think this week I may do a couple  different setups and see if i like the looks of what I have and then maybe I'll get the nerve up to actaully fill out a vendor application form
