I was in the Mug Rug Swap 4 made this mug rug for Bakeneko's mister, who is an ornithologist and bands the endangered Piping Plover.

I knew as soon as I read the swap questionnaire that Bakeneko sent that I wanted to make a Piping Plover mug rug! Birds = Crafting = Awesomesauce, especially when I can go into hardcore birder realm on things. Cheesy So I searched around and found this site by searching "sandpiper quilt" (sandpipers and plovers are very similar): http://jillmccloydesigns.com/gallery/decorative-small-quilts/

I was able to print that out and with just a bit of adjustment (there's that hardcore birder bit. Tongue) use the pieces as templates for my applique.  I machine stitched the large cream and white portions and then used a blanket stitch for everything else.  I put it on some fabric from an old pair of camos and made some "waves" from blue linen. Every single thing was from my stash! I've also not really don't an applique with more than one or two pieces before but this was pretty fun and rewarding. Hopefully I do it again one day!

Oh, and repositionable spray adhesive is your best friend for this kind of thing! It was amazing.

I didn't realize the back was wonky until now! It looked way better when I sent it out I thought. Cheesy

Oh this looks fabulous!  And the fact that it's all stash is even better.

I love the different fabrics you used - it looks so accurate. Cheesy

Thank you! I think the beak is a little too thick but at a certain point I had to stop obsessing. Cheesy

I love this, it's brilliant how the camo fabric works as a beachy-looking background.  Smiley

I love this mugrug too!  Using the camo is brilliant!  Really stupendous job!  I want to be one of those bird-band girls!   Cool
