Only problem is that most power drills are not built for continuous use, they can overheat, the bushings wear out etc, etc, etc.

What you want is a small motor with a long shaft and variable speed, I suggest dissecting an old fan and mounting on an extended shaft, easy enough to do, but not very pretty.
