You could always check http://www.ravelry.com it's free to sign up if you haven't already and has a bunch of free knitting pattern. That would be the best place to start.

This nagged at me! So I used the power of the internet. It's called ladder stitch. Here is the link to the stitch pattern:

The scarf itself looks like sport weight. Maybe 4.5 needles? Then a garter stitch at the beginning and end with buttons and button holes! Personally, I would add an edge on it too, two knit stitches on each side, slipping the first stitch on each row.

this is TOO cute. I will troll around and see what I can do to find the source.

here are some similar buttoned scarves: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#view=captioned_thumbs&pa=dropped-stitches|eyelets|lace|mesh%2Bribbed%2Bbuttoned&sort=best&pc=shawl-wrap|cowl

more specifically: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/elanor

make that in the correct lace rib and you are golden.

make sure to post pix!

I'm thinking this is crocheted.  See how the 'rungs' of the ladder are offset from each other in the OP?  The ladder lace would certainly work though!
