can opener and pizza cutter!
you could make/get him an eye mask, pair that with the earplugs and you've got some great sleeping!
I don't know if a guy would use this, but for girls, A big tote bag with towels and the shower flip flops and all that stuff, soap, etc. that they can just carry to the showers with them.

I actually made two 'dorm-prep kits' for some friends of mine.  I found some beat up suit-cases at a yardsale and filled them full of dollar store goodies, and a set of old towels I promised them.  They got a kick out of it, and as it happens they are in the same room!
I put in: Band-aids, baby powder, shampoo/conditioner, body lotion, coffee mugs, razors, shaving cream...etc.  (BTW- we discoverd that dollar store razors are definitely one of those 'get what you pay for' type deals... use with caution!)

Beer Bottle Opener-they have talking ones.
Floor pillow
pens, post it notes, white out, other desk accessories.
Staples gift card
A Deck of cards- For drinking games
A Pitcher and Koolaid
A set of Large plastic cups for drinks.
Metal utensils (get em cheap at the dollar store or walmart, he's gonna lose them)
Gift cards to his favorite stores.
A Hoodie Sweatshirt!  He will LIVE in it!
Umbrella, Raincoat by NorthFace
A fun mousepad
Disposable Camera
Milk-crate-  good for everything!
a fan is a MUST-the more the better. Maybe a clip-on one for the bed in addition to a box fan. (i'm assuming he's unlucky like everyone else, and that he wont have a/c).
x-mas lights- they're good and they dont produce a lot of heat.
Shot glasses-  Check these out, I thought they were cute. and the price is decent. You just cant buy them online, so hopefully you have a spencers

As you can probably tell, most things on my list have to do with eating and drinking.  Cuz thats really most of what you do in college anyways.  But If I had to pick 5 things from my list that I couldnt live without in school, it would be a beer bottle opener, fan, shot glasses, deck of cards, and a mug.

Toolkit mentioned above absolutely excellent.
Microwave snacks also good.

One suggestion I haven't seen is: a dry erase marker board, complete with markers:

a small one for near his desk (for tracking assignmentsand To Do lists and phone numbers) and

a really large one for the outside of his door(for people who stopped by and want to leave him a message. My son bought a 4ft x 8ft sheet of showerboard from the building supply store and cut it down to door size for all the messages he might ever get (He was an RA in the dorm) and it was a great source of fun and convenience..

I love the whole "in a box idea" and since my friend is going off to uni in about a months time I thought I'd make her a "uni in a box" as a going away/birthday present. So far i've got: (the comments are from the note thats goin in the box)
tea towel (for handling hot things when you take them out the over, not for drying pots, leave them to drip dry :-))
sellotape (Sticking things to things/back together)
bottle of alcopop (to drink! duuuh!)
copy of taming of the shrew (shes goin 2 study english) (to read :-))
angel halo (for freshers week/halloween/xmas party/random night out!)
party poppers (cos theyre fun!)
random CD i think she'll like (to listen to)
soap (to wash with, or as a helpful hint to smelly flatmates!!)
drawing pins (to attach things to notice boards)
first aid kit (for reattaching fingers when you cut them off!)
computer screen wipes (do not confuse them with the anti septic wipes!!!)
highlighter/marker pens (for writing on things)
sewing kit (it's useful, TRUST ME!!)
condoms (really? do you need me to explain what they're for??? also good for balloons :-))
blu tack (for sticking things to the walls!)
marbles (dunno!)
elastic bands (useful!)
dice (random)
pencil sharpener (to sharpen pencils with)
matches (again...USEFUL!)
bubble wrap (for parcels or when you get stressed!!)

im also gonna get her bottle opener (for opening bottles), Asprin (for hangovers), Disposable camera (to take random photos!!)

Havent seen anyone else put disposable camera on the list, theyre soooooo useful! i have over a hundred pics from my first year at uni, great memories!! oh an if some of the things seem a bit random its prolly cos I found out in my first week that i seriously needed that item (apart from the marbles, they r a bit random, but she'll like em, she likes random stuff!!!)

trash cans, trash bags, big signs that remind him to take out the trash.  and while disposable things are convenient, boy usually won't bother to put them in the trash.  so that cup of ramen is going to sit around for weeks under the bed, and trust me, that isn't good.
also, maybe a discreet-looking book (use the cover of a book he likes maybe) of how to do things.  laundry, dishes, easy microwave recipes, how to take his temperature and what medicines to take for what.  that way he can look up stuff when he needs to and won't be embarrassed carring laundry for dummies to the laundromat.

I made a biiigggggg list of a lot of things to put in a dorm in a box gift.  So many people had asked the same question, so I figured one big fat list would help.
