I'll be looking to make a pair of mittens as soon as I finish this scarf and hat, but I don't want to have to take them off everytime I need to use my phone.  I don't care about having my fingers out, just my thumb to tap accept/slide the swiper/send a text.  I am not a fan of the mitts that are basically gloves with a mitten flap - they are big and bulky and not what I am looking for.

What I am thinking is one of two things - incorporate a hole into the thumb just large enough that there could be contact, or limit the 'flap' to just the thumb.  Sort of like the old sandwich bags that you rolled over at the top to lock the sandwich in place?  Then I could just flip over an inch of  fabric to expose just the tip of my finger.

Anyone have any ideas?

What you're looking for are called "texting gloves". They're gloves that have a flap for just the thumb, but in some cases, the pointer finger too. I couldn't find any in stores so I had to search for a pattern and luckily, red heart had a free pattern online. I made some tweaks to it and crocheted myself two texting gloves. Id post a pic but I don't know how Tongue
This is a link to the pattern

In my opinion, some of the directions are wrong, but if you're an experienced crocheter, I'm sure you'll figure out how to make it work Smiley

I'm not extremely experienced, but I'm sure I can apply take that idea for the thumb and turn it into into the mittens I want.

Thank you so much.

I think leaving a hole big enough to establish contact would be easier when you wear them. Wouldn't it get a little tiresome having to uncover your thumb every time you use your phone?

If you dont want to have a thumb flap or any finger flap at all, it is optional. You just dont need to follow that part of the directions. The thumb flap does not bother me.
