Last summer, my dad made recycled a (tall'ish) round bucket as an upside down tomato planter.  It worked like a charm.  All he did was cut a 2-3 inch hole in the bottom, insert the tomato seedling and filled it with soil.  He used the handle to hang it from the fence.  He got a pretty good harvest! You could probably cut holes in the sides in increase the number of seedlings planted.  I'm planning on making one this summer with the buckets they use to sell compost in at Whole Foods.
I just finished doing this the other day with a 5 gallon pail. It works pretty well, except it has been very windy the last few days and my poor tomatoes are wind whipped! I also have one that is a home for 2 cucumber plants
