I found a broken umbrella on the street and figured I should use the fabric for something. I love very light reusable bags that I can throw in my purse so I decided to make one since the material was perfect for this.

You just need to carefully remove the material from the umbrella frame, iron it with a low heat, fold it in half and trace a bag shape onto it. I sewed an extra layer into the top part of the bag so the handles would be stronger. And I also sewed a mini pouch on the inside to tuck the back into when it's not in use.

An easy project!

If you want detailed instructions (or are confused about the double layer in the handles), you can watch the short video I made which describes the steps in detail, and feel free to ask me anything here Smiley   https://youtu.be/hEwg18BEwjs

I found a broken umbrella downstairs TODAY! How timely is this? And I love fold-upable bags to carry in my purse too, I am never without one or two of those. Thank you so much! This project ROCKS!

A great re-use and tutorial.  Thanks for sharing your video.  I too found a broken umbrella a while back and removed the hardware to potentially make a bag out of, but I was thinking of a drawstring type bag.  Someone should start a not-for-profit to refashion all these broken umbrellas into bags!

Yes! There is actually a store near where I live that makes bags from recycled banners, kite surfs, and excess material from umbrella factories. Still... not the material from broken umbrellas so they have some more flexibility with the pattern, haha

A drawstring bag would work well too! I just copied the shape of a bag I use all the time that is wearing out.  Thanks for watching Smiley
