Happiness is a warm min pin...

View Profile WWW
« on: June 05, 2005 11:50:29 AM »

I made this travel tote for a friend of mine to use when she went to Germany. I included a blanket, eyemask, and bookmark which I made as well. There was also travel tissues, face wipes, chapstick, a book, a pen, and a travel journal included to complete the gift.

Thanks for looking!

Looks like you thought of everything she might need on that long plane flight as well as plenty of pockets for the passport, airline tickets, etc.  And it is not so huge and heavy to carry like some ready-made ones are.  The scarf is  such a pretty touch.  I would  love to have one of those for when I fly places.  Good job and I know your friend  appreciated it even more after she used it.

I love everything about that bag!  It also seems like the perfect size for someone like me who is in college and has to tote around a lot of stuff.  Your friend is a very lucky girl  Grin

thanks everyone for the great comments!

it was free handed all. I found that great material for the scarf in the $1 section at Walmart and then the other fabrics there as well. Took me one night of sewing and I spent less then $3 on fabrics!

It's a simple boxed bottom tote with an exterior pocket added to each side. I left a small gap when I sewed on the straps so I could thread the scarf through.

I wrote down the measurements for it somewhere in my craftroom so it'll take me a second to find them but I can post them if you would like.

that is a beautiful bag! The perfect size, great color... how did you make the handles sturdy enough to tote everything she'll have in it?

Only 3$ for that amazing bag?!  That right there is reason enough to finally get this sewing machine fixed and learn how to use it.  What an inspiration

The blue fabric is a heavy denim and when I did the straps I measured a 4 inch wide strip and ironed it in half long ways. Then folded the raw edge into the fold line and ironed that then re-ironed the first crease to make each handle 4 layers thick. then I used the brown binding to sew a strip of that down the middle of the handle to give it some color. The handles go all the way down into the side pockets to the bottom seam to make sure they would be able to hold a lot of weight.

Since the raw edges of each piece are covered with the binding tape on the outside of the bag I did not have to line it and there will be no raw edges exposed to fray. It was a very strong bag and like the 5th I've made like this.

Shocked Shocked OHHHHH this is MAHVELOUS!!!!! Shocked Shocked

I keep coming back to drool!  You did such a wonderful and professional job and with the $$ you spent (or didn't spend)!

Okay, I have been trying not to do this, but "a basic square bottom bag" is not basic to me Undecided.  So, I'm gonna do it - Will you do a tute on the next fabulous one of these that you make? Grin  I, and I am sure many others, would be MOST GRATEFUL to you!

Thanks for sharing this treasure with us!

The blanket was just one yard of sweat shirt material and I made some 1" baise tape then sewed it on to the edge. I made a scrunchie to hold it rooled from the brown biase tape and some eleatic.

The eyemask was done by copying the shape of one I already had. I embrod the eye lashes on my using a thread spool for the curve then free handing the eyelashes. There are two layers of the sweatshirt material one fuzzy side out on the back side and an extra one on the inside for cushion and light blocking. I used the tutorial I found on here.

The book make was a 4 inch strip about 6 inches long. I folded about a 1/4 inch down from the top and ironed then folded the bottom in to a point and ironed. Then I folded and ironed the sides into the center. Then took a 7 inch biase tape piece and folded the edge down over the front and the bottom folded over to the inside. Sewed down about 1/16 inch from the edge of the tape all the way through the whole thing. The tassle was made from brown embrod floss.

Hope that helps...
