Graphic Designer & Crafter!

I left Craftster awhile back because I had a disagreement with a moderator about watermarks. I felt very discouraged to come back and repost, however I still have questions and frankly don't quite understand some things.  I am almost a senior in college for graphic design, I am well aware of the laws and licenses involved protecting certain works. I know this community is a great community, but this issue has been bothering me endlessly. I respect the Craftster rules, however I am very confused at what the whole issue is with watermarks.

On all of my work, I watermark my images which includes my own logo, my name and website. Watermarks are the only things that artists and designers have to protect their own works. I have had awful experiences with work and patterns being stolen because of lack of watermark, in which jobs and work were stolen from me. My work on here was taken down simply because of the fact I want to protect my work, but cannot include anything with a .com, which my watermark has . I am very confused at the issue why. Especially if I own the website and all of the material on it, a website simply with my portfolio and work, not EVEN a store or anything. I have been using the same mark for about seven years now, and it is a representation of myself and my work. I don't really like any images on the net of mine not having the mark, just because there are so many issues with copyright infringement, stealing, etc.

I decided I would post this on here, because I really enjoy this site, I truly don't see or understand what is so wrong with this. It has bothered me so much, I felt like I should tell my story to the people of Craftster. Like I said before, I respect the rules, I would like to know why it is such a big issue on here though. Craftster seems to be the only site that I have put my work on that dosnt allow my watermarks. I never got an explanation either when I asked the mod, they just said they enforced rules.

My watermark looks as followed (its usually faded in the images)- http://www.blog.tylonproducts.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Screen-shot-2011-05-14-at-7.14.22-PM.png

I apologize if this isn't the right category. I had no idea where to post this. I was just looking for a reasoning/ explanation to this.

Thank you very much!

I'm not the person to answer your questions, but I'm curious as to what your concerns are over creating a watermark that fits within the rules? That would afford the same protection as any watermark (which isn't much -- I've had people remove my watermark from video, much less static images) and will allow you to post without conflict.

Yep, you can totally watermark your work with your name, user name or whatever, *just not* a web address or something that directs people to another website, blog, etc. No need to leave Craftster about it or worry about it, it's just to keep c-ster a place where people can freely share ideas, without being bothered by lots of self promotion. You may need to swap out the watermark for a non-url one if that's what you typically use, but as long as it doesn't have an addy for another site, you're free to post away! You could put a link back to your website in your signature, since that's allowed.

So I've had two threads limbo'd this morning because I'm a dope and didn't even realise I couldn't put my url in my images. Anywho, I have a couple of issues with this.

First of all I'm lazy. When I prep my files they are being uploaded to several places. I really don't want to have to create a separate set of images files just for craftster. I mean I love this place to bits but... I'm lazy!

My second issue is that the photos used here are linked elsewhere directly from this site. Does that make sense? What I mean is that there are buttons for sharing our projects on all sorts of social media sites directly from the craftster post. As soon as you create the ability to easily share our projects outside of craftster, to promote craftster, well I think it's sort of cheeky to say we can't watermark with our own .com's to protect/promote ourselves.

I know the arguments against what I've just said... "Stop being a lazy dope and just take off the damn .com!" and "People would just link to the projects in another way..." but this is kinda bugging me too.

I know people can just remove the marks (it's especially easy on my images) but that small pain in the ass factor will deter a few people and really, at this point, I just accept that people will swipe/share my images so YES! I do want my url on my photos so that when they are sent out into the big bad web my addy is on them. Leaving off the .com is silly because what about those who use .ca .ws .org or .net?

Gah! I don't know. Maybe I'm just grumpy from no sleep last night but this morning this issue is getting to me. Maybe I'll feel differently after a stiff drink at noon Tongue

If you google "knickertwists", your Etsy shop is the first result, and blogspot the second, so if people are trying to find your site based off a watermark that only says "knickertwists", I don't think they will have a problem Smiley
