I got this jewelry box at the thriftstore.  It had a paper-like covering that was in bad shape.  When I pulled it off I found out that while the box was wood, the top and the bottom were heavy cardboard and the drawer fronts were metal.  I covered the box with old matchbook covers then coated it with high gloss varnish.  I painted the hardware black.

with all those thin drawers it looked like a pile of books at first glance. What a lovely way to remember all your trips and nights out.

Oh Wow!  I love it!  How did you get the matchbook covers to lie flat like that?  I know you varnished it, but it still seems that the crease in each cover would have given you a lot of trouble.

Thanks.  The matchbooks were old and had been pressed flat forever.  They did kind of bow when I glued them on, but I did a side at a time and then weighted it down with books until the glue set.
