My daughter wants this dress (link below) for father/daughter dance and Easter.  I cant find anything really similar... have you??  I am a fairly beginning/intermediate level sewer and I am not the most comfortable altering patterns a ton (certainly not creating my own!!!)

Annnnnnd really dumb question, but do you buy the fabric pleated like that or is that something that you do yourself?

You can sometimes buy fabric already pleated, but there often isn't a lot of choice for fabrics and colours.  You might be able to find something but it might be easier to do it yourself.

As for patterns I have found a couple that are similar, but not quite the same.  They are gathered rather than pleated.  You should be able to adapt them to pleating by using the same general idea but by making the dress fuller (experimenting with cheap fabric would be a good idea here).  Depending on where you buy your fabric/patterns they might be able to help you with converting the gathers to pleats (atleast in terms of how much additional fabric you would need).

Good luck.

You are going to have to buy fabric with the pleats already in it. It is a synthetic fabric that has been heat treated to hold that shape. But once you have bought the fabric its an easy dress. I'm thinking a pillowcase dress type shape would work, with some flowers around the neckline?

Lets all go to Jack Taylor's to celebrate!

Do you happen to know where to buy such fabric? Or at least key words to google (pleated fabric I suppose?)

Thanks so much for assistance.

Fashion Fabric in NYC seem to do it, although it's a "call for details" product as it sounds as though they put it through their pleating machine to order.

That specific pleat is called a "sunset pleat".
