I almost forgot to post this! Totally missed out on the Craftster challenge this year, but that's okay. This ended up being such a fun costume, and really easy to wear. Great outfit if you want to pick up some nerds.

This is the product of hours of hot glue. And paint. And Ribbon. And hand-stitching stiff vinyl with a tiny needle. This isn't the best picture - there are also two LED lights in the helmet, the red one, and a blue on off to the left. I made the helmet using a straw sunhat as a base. I cut out a large circle of grey vinyl, and started hot gluing the edges under the brim of the hat while molding a dome shape, and cut it up into the middle whenever it wanted to fold. I ended up with a pretty rugged dome, with five slits up to the top. It was at this point that i discovered the vinyl didn't want to glue to itself, so I started the two hour process of hand stitching the slits shut. Uggghhh. Carpal tunnel. It ended up okay. Then I painted the whole thing with silver, black and blue acrylic paint. For his little holo-projecting lens, I cut out a hole the shape of a small MAC makeup container, and glued the empty container I had on hand directly to the straw underneath. I did the same with two, blue and red LED finger lights (the kind sold at novelty/gift shops for dancing). The dress was just ribbon and grey leather hot-glued on to simulate R2's various details.
